Pre-Sea Training for Deck,
Engine and Saloon Ratings
Pre-sea training is mandatory for every prospective
seafarer, to learn the basics about ships and shipping,
and also to acquire necessary elementary knowledge and
skills in seamanship, technical or galley / service
areas, apart from exposure to safety practices as per
IMO and SOLAS guidelines.
The Nepal Institute of Marine Technology is a training
establishment that conducts courses as per the specified
guidelines in the Deck, Engine and Saloon disciplines,
for training such prospective seafarers.
The duration of the pre-sea training courses for ratings
is 12 to 16 weeks.
A high standard of training is imparted to the candidates
of the respective disciplines, and will also include
ship familiarisation, swimming, boat drill and outdoor
activities. The courses lay special emphasis on Safety,
Vis a Vis usage of Life Saving Appliances (LSA) and
Fire Fighting Appliances. (FFA).
